South Korea is considering a law to ban cryptocurrencies trading on local exchanges.
Park Sang-ki, Justice Minister of South Korea, said that virtual currencies were “great concerns” and that the ministry was preparing a bill to ban all cryptocurrencies trading.
South Korea’s presidential office later released a statement confirming that the government is considering the ban, but nothing has been finalised yet.
Local Bitcoin price fell by a fifth after the justice minister’s comments.
South Korea accounts for 20% of global Bitcoin transactions and has more than a dozen cryptocurrency exchanges.
The country’s second-biggest virtual currency operator, Bithumb, was raided by police recently due to alleged tax evasion.
