Despite industry concerns of Brexit, the U.K. government unveiled its plans to increase twice the number of working visa for highly skilled workers, including tech-savvy candidates.
The plan will double the number of Tier 1 visas for “exceptional talent” to 2,000 a year. In addition, the government-funded industry body Tech City UK has also been granted 21 million pounds ($27 million) to attract tech experts to areas outside of London. Not only that, a new 20 million-pound fund for public services has just been launched by the U.K. government to invest in artificial intelligence.
"As we prepare to leave the European Union, I am clear that Britain will remain open for business," said U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May in a statement. "That means Government doing all it can to secure a strong future for our thriving tech sector."
Tier 1 visas are currently shared among industries like science, medicine, arts and the tech sector. The visa provides immigrants the right to live, work and receive government benefits for five years. Before Brexit, there was little need for such visa applications.
